Fifteen years later, Joe's estranged son, Ford, an explosive ordnance disposal officer in the U.S. Navy, travels to Japan to help his father. They sneak into the Janjira quarantine zone and discover that the area is not radioactive and that a secret research facility has been built around the plant's ruins. There, they witness a massive winged creature, known as a MUTO (Massive Unidentified Terrestrial Organism), emerge from a cocoon, destroy the facility, and escape. Joe is fatally injured during the chaos.
