The film chronicles Manjhi’s life from his youth, his deep bond with his wife Falguni, the tragedy of her death, and his subsequent obsession with carving the mountain. Unlike a typical Bollywood biopic, Ketan Mehta avoids over-glorification. Instead, he focuses on the harsh realities of poverty, caste oppression, and the bureaucratic indifference Manjhi faced.
