Previous studies have examined the representation of women in Japanese media, highlighting the prevalence of stereotypes and sexist attitudes. For example, research on anime and manga has shown that female characters are often depicted as submissive, passive, and overly dependent on male characters. Moreover, the portrayal of women's bodies in these media outlets has been criticized for being objectifying and reinforcing a culture of sexualization.
This study examines the representation of female characters in Japanese pop culture, specifically in anime and manga. Using a critical discourse analysis approach, we investigate how female characters are portrayed in various media outlets, including their physical characteristics, personality traits, and roles in narratives. Our findings suggest that Japanese media often perpetuates certain stereotypes and beauty standards, particularly with regards to physical appearance.
