The story takes place during the Sierra Leone Civil War (1991-2002). Danny Archer (played by Leonardo DiCaprio) is a ruthless diamond smuggler who gets caught up in the rebel turmoil. He teams up with Solomon Vandy (played by Djimon Hounsou), a fisherman who has been forced into slavery by the rebels. Solomon's rare pink diamond, which he had discovered before being enslaved, becomes the focal point of their unlikely partnership.
