A fair-skinned, blue-eyed boy named Azur, son of a wealthy French nobleman, is raised by a loving, dark-skinned nurse named Jénane. She treats him as her own son, Asmar (whose name means "dark" in Arabic). The two boys are milk-brothers and inseparable. Jénane tells them the legend of the Djinn-fairy, a captive fairy who awaits rescue by a pure-hearted prince. Azur’s father abruptly dismisses Jénane and sends her and Asmar away.
